Waterproof body chains: the guide

Waterproof body chains have quietly become the jewelry of summer — pieces you put on in early summer and forget about until autumn. But “waterproof” gets used loosely. Here is what actually makes a body chain survive the sea, and how to choose, wear and care for one.

What “waterproof” really means

Most jewelry isn’t built for water. Plated brass and sterling silver tarnish, react with sweat and sun cream, and the plating lifts after a few swims.

A genuinely waterproof piece is made from a metal that doesn’t corrode and a plating that’s bonded to stay. For body chains — worn on bare skin, in the heat, in and out of the water — that difference is everything.

316L stainless steel, explained

316L is surgical-grade stainless steel. The “316” marks a specific alloy; the “L” means low-carbon, which improves corrosion resistance. Crucially it contains molybdenum, which resists the chloride ions in saltwater, pool water and sweat.

That’s why 316L is used for surgical implants — and why it doesn’t rust, tarnish or turn skin green. It’s also hypoallergenic and nickel-safe, so it’s comfortable for sensitive skin and constant wear.

Real gold plating vs. cheap coatings

A gold look is only as durable as the plating underneath. Thin flash-plating on brass wears off quickly.

A real, properly bonded gold plating on 316L steel keeps its color through salt water, sweat and sun cream and doesn’t peel — so a gold body chain stays gold through a whole summer, not just the first weekend.

Made for the beach and the summer

A body chain is worn over the torso — over a bikini, a slip dress, or on bare skin. Because it’s waterproof, you don’t take it off to swim: it goes from the beach into the sea, into the pool, into the shower and on to dinner.

That’s the point. It’s jewelry you decide on once and then simply live in.

How to wear a body chain

It clasps at the back like a necklace, and the chains fall along the front of the torso. Adjust the length so the center line sits comfortably; the chains are meant to drape rather than sit tight.

Layer it over swimwear in summer, or under an open shirt for the evening.

Care — almost none

Rinse with fresh water after the sea or the pool and pat dry. No polishing, no removing before you swim. A waterproof 316L piece with real gold plating is designed to be left on.
